Aram Bartholl: “Offline Art” @ Xpo Gallery, Paris

Offline Art” ist das neue Ausstellungsformat von Aram Bartholl – präsentiert in der Pariser Xpo Gallery (bis 14. März): “Web based art works will be accessible via wireless network but disconnected from the internet. A high profile selection of 14 artists of various “Internet generations” (Cory Arcangel, Kim Asendorf, Claude Closky, Constant Dullaart, Dragan Espenschied, Faith Holland, JODI, Olia Lialina, Jonas Lund, Evan Roth, Phil Thompson, Emilie Gervais & Sarah Weis) – who are all working digitally and online – will present recent and new works. Browser-based digital art works are broadcast locally from wifi routers which are not connected to the Internet. Each art work is assigned a single wifi router which is accessible through any device, like smart-phones, tablets or laptops. To access the different art works, the visitor has to connect to each network individually. The name of the network reflects the name of the artist. No matter what URL is opened, only the specific artwork appears in the browser. A small web server holding the art piece is installed on a USB flash drive which is connected to the router. Like frames holding the art, the routers are hung in the exhibition space which is otherwise empty. The art itself becomes visible only on the visitor’s private screen.”

Aram Bartholl: “DVD Dead Drop”

“For this new commissioned work, artist Aram Bartholl (Berlin, b. 1972) will embed an inconspicuous, slot-loading DVD burner into the side of the Museum, available to the public 24 hours a day. Visitors who find the Dead Drop and insert a blank DVD-R will receive a surprise collection of digital files that may include found footage, animated GIFs, video games, feature films, or interactive art curated or created by artists selected by Bartholl. DVD Dead Drop imbues the act of data transfer with a tangibility left behind in a world of cloud computing and appstores, using a medium—the digital versatile disc—that is quickly becoming another artifact of the past. DVD Dead Drop is a continuation of Bartholl’s series of offline file-sharing networks in public spaces. The original Dead Drops cemented unauthorized USB thumb drives into walls, buildings, and curbs, encouraging a “read-write” information ecosystem that mirrors discourse in public spaces. Here the “read-only” nature of DVD Dead Drop comments on the information flow of a museum, where the dissemination of carefully considered and filtered knowledge follows something much closer to a consumer broadcast model.”

Via

* Buchtipp: “Next Nature“. “Today, the human impact on our planet cannot be underestimated. Climate change, synthetic biology, mass urbanization – ‘We were here’ echoes all over. Although many people have tried to improve our relationship with nature, only few have asked the elementary question ‘what is nature?’” Via

* Buchtipp II: “Art & Activism in the Age of Globalization“. “In a time of globalization, populism, hypercapitalism, migration, War on Terror, and global warming, artistic engagement is vital. Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization takes the measure of contemporary activist art. What is the role of art and activism in the polarized, populist society of the spectacle? Art & Activism examines both the criticism of engagement as a mere pose and the need for cultural activism in today’s society.” Via

Buchtipp: “Aram Bartholl – The Speed Book”

Schon mal vormerken: Die erste Monografie zum Werk von Aram Bartholl erscheint ab Januar 2012 im Gestalten Verlag – u.a. herausgegeben von Domenicio Quaranta, gestaltet von Manuel Bürger und mit Texten von Josephine Bosma, Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Jon Cates, Lindsay Howard, Alessandro Ludovico, Evan Roth, Bruce Sterling, Brad Troemel. “Aram Bartholl’s work explores the power structures, the social systems, the cultural innovations, the inner dynamics, the languages, and the products that are shaping our age. This first comprehensive monograph offers entry to an oeuvre in which space and cyberspace mingle and mangle each other, a realm that uses as little technology as possible while still speaking a digital language. Aram Bartholl: The Speed Book features savvy experiments with transitions from the virtual to the physical: USB sticks embedded into walls, buildings, and curbs; giant real-life versions of Google’s red map markers positioned in public spaces; portraits generated from search results. An introduction by editor Domenico Quaranta as well as essays by science fiction writer Bruce Sterling, art critics, and fellow artists guide readers through a wonderfully skewed version of reality under the influence of the internet, something Sterling refers to as Bartholl’s “self-created twilight zone.”

Aram Bartholl: “Dead Drops”

Das neue Projekt von Aram Bartholl: “Dead Drops is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. I am ‘injecting’ USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places (so far 5 in NYC) to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is still in progress, to be continued here and in more cities.”
